Askeaton A…. 5 Newcastlewest A....3
(Griffin 2, Whelan, M. Kenrick, D. Kenrick)
A very accomplished display by the As based on hard work and good positive attitudes, resulted in a very good team performance which saw us take all 3 points against a strong Newcastlewest XI. Askeaton now sit proudly at the top of the Premier and all at the club congratulate the management and players on their endeavors thus far.
On a blustery Sunday morning it was Newcastle who started the brighter and took the game to us early on with some crisp passing and quick movement. After the early onslaught, the Askeaton lads took stock of the situation and began to play good passing football. On 15 minutes Griffin sent Whelan in and Sean raced clear of the last defender and rifled a shot to the top corner. A few moments later Willie received the ball on the edge of the box and put another in the top corner. From here on we should have really pushed home our advantage, but the visitors came back and scored from the spot. Then poor defending by us as a team saw us concede two sloppy goals to let Newcastle go in 3-2 ahead at half-time.
We made a jittery start to the second half and Newcastle could have extended their lead only for some last-ditch tackling from the teak tough Tom Kelly. We introduced Ryan and O'Mahony on the hour mark and they both made an instant impact, putting Newcastle on the back foot.
We finally equalized after a succession of corners when Dave Kenrick prodded home from close range. Great control and perseverance from Massey on the right saw him cross to Moss Kenrick and he buried the ball in the back of the net. Willie then put the icing on the cake when he crossed from the left and the ball evaded everyone and flew into the bottom corner. The most important thing shown on Sunday was our fighting spirit and it was a great team performance from everyone involved. Special mention must go to Maurice Carrig who was immense and Brian Corrigan for his work rate in the centre of the park.

Our Youths made the journey to Kilcornan to take on the locals and after an entertaining 90 minutes played in windy conditions, the boys returned back to the square with all 3 points. As you would expect Askeaton started the more impressive, albeit the play was rather scrappy, with the home side intent on playing route one type football. Askeaton had tne bulk of the possession keeping the ball well, but mucn of the best play fell down in the final third with Jonathan and Shane getting on the end of a few moves but failing to apply the finishing touch . During this period our keeper Rob Hurley made two fine saves in the Askeaton goal and the impressive Madigan threw himself in front of everything thrown at him. However, they could do nothing to stop our opponents from opening their account before the break.
Askeaton were very good in the second period with Sean, Alan and Gareth first class in defence. Maurice, Michael and Fergal ran the show in the middle of the park with our striker Sam his usual confident self, scoring a great equalising goal. Our lynchpin O'Shaughnessy was a continual threat ana was rewarded when he cracked a 25 yard free kick to the back of the net. Not to be outdone, his buddy Maurice made the game safe when he converted from distance. After this there was no way back for the home side, and thus the 3 points came back to the town. Note-Speedy recoveries are extended to James, Ross, Levi and Conor who are presently side-lined with injuries.

U16 GIRLS LEAGUE

Askeaton…………..2
(Jenny Togher 2)
A progress report on this dedicated group of girls makes positive reading and I’m quite sure -the best is yet to come from these young ladies. The team has been impressive over the previous season, reaching the last 8 of the FAI National Cup in May of this year, and on this occasion they were worthy winners. Askeaton came out of the traps well, dominating the early possession but a mixture of good goalkeeping, bad luck and and indifferent finishing meant that we didn't open our account until the 18th minute. It was worth the wait, as Jenny Togher’s well struck 20 yard shot from an acute angle was a great goal.
At this stage, we were on top in most sectors, particularly the defensive auartet of Rachel, Shauna, Michelle and Melanie who were not alone good individually but as a unit also. Our keeper Kate dealt capably with anything that came her way anaf her distribution was particularly noteworthy. The midfield trio of Hayleigh, Shona and Katie dominated this vital sector and laid a great platform for our front tnree. Jenny, as usual played as if her life depended on it. Both Maria ana Sarah thrived on the quality possession and each made an imprint on goal. Both subs introduced played their part, Jane in defence and Leanne in attack.
However, we seemed to rest on our laurels in the second half and were punished when Ballingarry's star player, Aoibhlinn equalized with a dipping volley from distance. But with 8 minutes left Sarah took matters into her own hands, taking a great pass from Hayleigh in her stride, and rounded three would be tackles before laying the ball off to Jenny who blasted home from the edge of the box for a deserved three points.
